4th General Meeting – CHRIS ANDERSON, SMASH BROS, and SNACKS

What else would you be doing? Homework?
And if that’s not enough to convince you to come out next Wednesday, then consider this: free snacks. And Paul’s bringing his Wii. We’re going to play Smash. Or other board/card games if we feel like it.
Come out and de-stress with us!

Our third general meeting provided a wealth of knowledge shared by our first guest speaker, Andrew Szeri, Dean of Graduate Assembly, as well as a panel of graduate students, who presented on life after undergraduate studies. Szeri shared his experiences as a queer scientist, researcher, and professor. He emphasized that it is perfectly acceptable to be “out” in the workplace as long as professionalism is sustained.
The meeting concluded with a grad student panel Q&A session. The panel’s participants were Zack Zubin, Jon Kotker, and Steven Wang, who shared their recent experiences of applying to graduate school. In addition, they discussed the main differences between undergraduate and graduate studies. They offered similar advice to students applying to graduate programs such as having a genuine interest in your specific field of study, as well as having as much research under your belt as possible. They also advised that although most graduate research programs leave students with more free time, it is important to establish goals with due dates and a close relationship with your advisor.
